Tragic and affecting, and drawing heavily on George Eliot’s own rural upbringing and relationship with her brother, The Mill on the Floss is one of literature’s finest evocations of childhood and adolescence, and introduces, in Maggie Tulliver, one of the most beloved heroines in the English canon. With its poignant portrayal of sibling relationships, The Mill on the Floss is considered George Eliot's most autobiographical novel it is also one of her most powerful and moving. ![]() Yet, as she grows older and the family struggle under the weight of severe pecuniary difficulties, she becomes increasingly caught between the divergent expectations of the four men in her life: a doting father, an obdurate and vengeful brother, a good-looking and frivolous suitor and an earnest old playmate who happens to be the son of her father and brother’s sworn enemy. Raised in the idyllic setting of Dorlcote Mill, the wild and wilful Maggie Tulliver adores her elder brother Tom and is forever trying to gain the approbation of her parents. The Mill on the Floss was Eliots second novel, appearing at a time when speculation still surrounded George Eliots real identity. SummariesLawyer Wakem takes away the mill on the river Floss from Edward Tulliver, whose ancestors owned it for 300 years, and becomes the worst enemy of Tul. ![]()

Bestiary turned out to be selected short stories from most of the collections published throughout Cortazar's life (which happened to include six of the eight stories in Bestiario). The examples are not my favorite but they serve to illustrate the points, usually, and I do appreciate them being there. Particularly the chapter on POV is the one people will find more useful, and probably one of the things we all struggle with the most. Some people deem them a bit simplistic since they do address things you (should have probably) learned in school, but I think even so it’s things we often forget to put into practice, specially when we’re trying to write entire worlds. Which is fine as craft exercises, they were great. It was less exercises than I expected, which was a bit of a bummer, and less varied in subject since they all surrounded the craft (prose and style), and not anything else related to writing.
